Packing List
Download the Packing List for basic cadets on the right. Refer to CAPR 39-1, which shows how everything should be placed on the uniform. Contact your local unit commander if you have questions on how to wear the uniform.
A total of two utility uniforms are required, either two OCP or two ABU, or one of each. Remember though that the OCP and ABU have completely different boots, socks, t-shirts, and belt, and items from the ABUs cannot be worn with the OCPs (and vice versa). Members can wear either the OCP or ABU uniform at encampment, but remember that you must have a complete OCP or ABU uniform and the ABU and OCP uniform items cannot be mixed. Here are links to Vanguard's sites for purchasing OCPs and ABUs. It is recommended to purchase OCPs for new cadets, as the ABUs will be retired in 2028.
Most importantly, ensure that your boots are broken in prior to encampment as there will be a lot of marching and your ankles will appreciate broken in boots. Wear them around the house and them outside as you get your feet used to them. Generally, boots with leather (or other stiff material) uppers take longer to break in than ones with nylon (or more flexible materials) do.
One other critically important item that cadets need to bring to encampment is a canteen and belt or a camelbak type hydration pack. Whichever one they bring, it should have a capacity of at least one quart (946 ml). While cadets can bring either one to encampment, a canteen and belt is recommended as they are easier to fill and far less likely to rupture. Additionally, camebaks are more more difficult to clean and are more expensive. Ultimately though, cadets can bring whichever type of hydration gear they would like.
Below are photos of a camelbak system and a canteen and belt combination. Camelbak systems are available through Amazon for as little as $25, while the canteen and belt combination is as little as $12.
